At the end of 2023, Canada introduced a new Digital Nomad Visa aimed at attracting remote workers to live in work in Canada.
This new digital nomad visa will allow any remote worker to live and work in Canada for up to 6 months. There is no salary threshold, and is open to anyone regardless of industry and profession.
Requirements
To apply for the digital nomad visa in Canada, there are some basic requirements:
- Proof of employment: You must provide evidence that you are employed by a company outside of Canada and can perform your job remotely.
- Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid during the application process
- Financial stability: You need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay.
- Health insurance: Proof of health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Canada is required.
- Biometrics: You will need to provide a photo and fingerprints.
- Interview: An interview with an immigration officer may be required as part of the application process.

Application process
- Prepare Documents: Gather all necessary documents, including:

- Proof of accommodation in South Africa
- Health insurance coverage
- Valid passport
- Complete the Application Form:
- Fill out the digital nomad visa application form available on the official Canadian immigration website.
- Submit Biometrics:
- Schedule an appointment to provide your photo and fingerprints at a designated biometrics collection center. CAD 85
- Pay the Application Fee:
- Pay the required visa application fee online. CAD 100
- Submit Your Application:
- Upload all necessary documents and submit your completed application online.
- Attend an Interview (if required):
- If requested, attend an interview with an immigration officer to discuss your application.
The application process is said to take between 4 to 8 weeks, although a variety of factors can influence this timeline.
Taxes
Since you'll only be staying in Canada for 6 months, you will not be considered a tax resident, and thus will not be required to pay taxes.
Do keep in mind, if you end up staying in Canada for longer than 183 days, you'll be considered a tax resident.
