• Only citizens from visa-except countries can apply for it.

• If you're 30 years or older*, you must have a minimum income of at least US$40,000.

• If you're between 20-29 years old*, you must have a minimum income of at least US$20,000.

• Must have at least US$10,000* in your bank account for the past 6 months.

• You can only stay for up to 6 months*.

Who can apply?

Citizens of visa-exempt countries are eligible to apply for Taiwan's digital nomad visa.

• Citizenship: You must be from a visa-exempt country, such as the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, or several EU countries.
• Income requirements:
  • 30 years or older: Annual income of at least $40,000 in one of the last two years.
  • 20-29 years old: Annual income of at least $20,000 in one of the last two years.
• Proof of average bank deposits of $10,000 per month over the last six months.
• International health insurance covering the entire duration of stay.
• A resume or work contract demonstrating remote work experience.

Application process

The application process for Taiwan's digital nomad visa involves several steps

1. Complete the Application Form: Fill out the application form available on the official website of Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs

2. Prepare Supporting Documents: Gather the necessary documents, including:
   • Two identical color passport photos (45 mm x 35 mm) taken within the last six months
   • A valid passport (original and photocopy) with at least six months' validity and blank pages
   • Proof of remote work experience, such as a personal resume or portfolio, and a valid work contract
   • Proof of meeting the income requirements (e.g., tax certificates, salary certificates, or proof of bank deposits)
   • Proof of international health insurance for the entire duration of stay

3. Submit the Application: Submit your application and supporting documents to a Taiwanese mission or embassy in your country of residence. If you're already in Taiwan legally, you can submit your application directly there
4. Review Process: The National Development Council (NDC) will review your application to verify your qualifications. This process may take up to 20 working days, and additional information may be requested if needed

Taxes

As a digital nomad in Taiwan, you'll be pleased to know that income earned outside of Taiwan is generally exempt from Taiwanese income tax

1. Duration of Stay: You won't be taxed on your foreign income if you stay in Taiwan for less than 183 days in a calendar year

2. Local Income: If you earn income from sources within Taiwan, that income will be subject to Taiwanese income tax.

3. Business Interests: If you have any business interests or investments in Taiwan, those may also be subject to local taxation.

Taiwan does not have a visa specifically designed for digital nomads. However, they do offer the Taiwan Employment Gold Card, which is suitable for digital nomads and remote workers.

Here’s what you need to know about the Taiwan Employment Gold Card:

• It serves as an open work permit and a residence permit.
• It has been active since February 2018.
• The Gold Card is effective from 1 to 3 years according to the work permit.
• Holders who meet certain conditions may apply for an extension within 4 months before the Card’s expiration date, for a maximum of 3 years each time.
• You can apply for permanent residence after 5 years.
• The platform only accepts online applications and does not accept written requests.

Who can apply?

1. Highly skilled or talented and can contribute to Taiwan’s economic development.
2. Recognized for their professional skills and have worked in the areas of technology, economics, education, culture, arts, sports, or other fields.

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

• Prove to have a monthly income of $5,700.
• Meet the qualifications for foreign special professionals.
