Estonia Digital Nomad Visa

The information about this visa was last updated at 11/20/2024

The Digital Nomad Visa in Estonia is a type of visa that allows remote workers to temporarily stay and work in Estonia for up to 1 year. This visa is suitable for digital nomads who can work online and independent of location.

Here are some key points about the Digital Nomad Visa:

  • It’s for those who work for an employer registered abroad, their company registered abroad, or as a freelancer for clients mostly abroad.
  • The application process takes up to 30 days.
  • You can apply for this visa at your nearest Estonian Embassy.
  • Your income must meet the minimum threshold (€4,500 gross of tax) during the six months preceding the application.

Please note that the Digital Nomad Visa does not provide the right to obtain Estonian citizenship or permanent residency. It is a temporary stay permit and standard Estonian Government visa rules and procedures apply.

Estonia also offers e-Residency, which is a secure, government-issued, digital identity that provides access to Estonia’s trusted, transparent e-governance services and business environment2. However, e-Residency does not provide any travel rights.

Requirements

  1. Proof of Remote Work: You must be able to work independent of location. This can be through an employer registered abroad, your own company registered abroad, or as a freelancer for clients mostly abroad.
  2. Income Threshold: You must have had a gross income of at least €4,500 per month for six months before applying.
  3. Application: You need to apply for the visa at the nearest Estonian Embassy or Consulate. The application process takes up to 30 days.
  4. Valid Travel Document: You must have a valid passport or other travel document issued within the last ten years.
  5. Health Insurance: You must have health insurance that covers you in Estonia.
  6. Visa Fee: There is a fee associated with the visa application that must be paid at the time of application.

Who is eligible for the Digital Nomad visa in Estonia?

As far as we know, everyone is eligible, as long as you meet the above requirements.

Taxes

  1. Tax Residency: If you stay in Estonia on a digital nomad visa for less than 183 days, you do not need to pay taxes. However, after 183 consecutive days, you will be considered a tax resident and will be taxed. The tax rate for Digital Nomads in Estonia is 20%.
  2. Worldwide Income: Most countries require people to pay personal income tax based on where they are resident, which may be different from their country of citizenship. Some countries apply their tax rules to a person’s worldwide income based on citizenship, no matter where their citizens live or reside.
  3. Corporate Taxes: If you operate or are involved in running any companies, you may also need to pay corporate taxes. There are usually different rules that apply to these two distinct forms of tax, and because personal tax is typically paid where a nomad is a tax resident, it means that corporate tax could be paid in a different jurisdiction.
  4. Double Taxation: Many countries around the world have entered into tax treaties to help people avoid paying double taxation. If you’re a digital nomad and travelling a lot, you may trigger a situation where two or more countries claim that you owe them taxes. In that scenario, if those countries have double taxation agreements with each other you may be able to avoid paying double tax.
